Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
