The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
