European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
